Open webinar: Technical supervision / audit of groundwater availability models (GAMs) with Python and Flopy - Case Rustler Aquifer - Jun 14 , 2023

  • Avenida Caminos del Inca 288 Surco, Lima Peru (map)

If we conceptualize a numerical model as a management tool, many topics have to be considered to give the model its full capabilities to be the basis of future decisions on groundwater management.

One part of the modeling concerns is how well the model is constructed and generally we have only a report and a repository to sort out what has been done. As a quality assurance process the supervisor has to check that everything that is stated / described in the report is actually on the model and that the numerical simulations and scenarios of the report come from the numerical run of the published model. From the model review a general discussion can be established of the main conceptual approaches of the model and then draw conclusions of its overall quality.

This webinar covers an applied case of a numerical model review from the report and published open data for the Rustler Aquifer, Texas, USA. The review is done with scripts of Flopy that represent the report figures and open the output data to extract water heads on selected wells.

Intructor

Saul Montoya M.Sc

Hydrogeologist - Numerical Modeler

Mr. Montoya is a Civil Engineer graduated from the Catholic University in Lima with postgraduate studies in Management and Engineering of Water Resources (WAREM Program) from Stuttgart University – Germany with mention in Groundwater Engineering and Hydroinformatics. Mr Montoya has a strong analytical capacity for the interpretation, conceptualization and modeling of the surface and underground water cycle and their interaction. He is in charge of numerical modeling for contaminant transport and remediation systems of contaminated sites. Inside his hydrological and hydrogeological investigations Mr. Montoya has developed an holistic comprehension of the water cycle, understanding and quantifying the main hydrological dynamic process of precipitation, runoff, evaporation and recharge to the groundwater system.
