Codes for simulation of solute transport in groundwater flow systems have evolved rapidly in recent years, driven by the increased interest in aquifer pollution and the development of remediation strategies. The MT3D package, developed by the USGS and coupled to MODFLOW, provides a tool for synthesizing these processes, evaluating their interactions and testing the effectiveness of groundwater remediation measures. The workshop will be hosted by the TU Wien, in Vienna, Austria, and the instructor is Saul Montoya, M.Sc., from Hatari Labs. The attendance is limited to 15 people on a first come first served basis.
Course content
Day 1 (13:00 – 17:00)
Session 1: Two-dimensional transport in a diagonal flow field
This session will develop a model for the 2D transport of a solute injected continuously from a point source in a steady state flow field at a certain angle. The session will cover:
Setting up MT3D options and migratory species
Defining regional flow based on vertex interpolation
Representing flow contours and concentrations over time
Session 2: Transport modelling with observation points
Session 2 builds on the 2D transport model developed in Session 1. The topics to be covered are:
Defining flow and transport modelling options
Inserting observation points
Creating interactive animation of the contaminant plume
Day 2 (13:00 – 17:00)
Session 3: Contaminant injection on a multilayer model with mesh refinement
In Session 3, we will create a 3D model of a contamination plume in a
multilayer aquifer over 100 days. The session will include:
Specifying the longitudinal to transverse dispersivity ratio
Analyzing head contours and the water balance
Mesh refinement on the well and the area downgradient
Session 4: Two-dimensional vertical transport in a heterogeneous aquifer
The fourth session covers the flow and transport of solutes in a heterogeneous
aquifer with two low hydraulic conductivity layers. This session includes:
A simulation of steady and transient states
Assigning the transmissivity, Kx and Kz parameters
Defining pollution areas and the contamination source
Trainer
Saul Montoya M.Sc.
Saul Montoya M.Sc. is a Hydrogeologist and Numerical Modeler. Mr. Montoya is a Civil Engineer graduated from the Catholic University in Lima with postgraduate studies in Management and Engineering of Water Resources (WAREM Program) from Stuttgart University – Germany with mention in Groundwater Engineering and Hydroinformatics. Mr Montoya has a strong analytical capacity for the interpretation, conceptualization and modeling of the surface and underground water cycle and their interaction.
He is in charge of numerical modeling for contaminant transport and remediation systems of contaminated sites. Inside his hydrological and hydrogeological investigations Mr. Montoya has developed a holistic comprehension of the water cycle, understanding and quantifying the main hydrological dynamic process of precipitation, runoff, evaporation and recharge to the groundwater system.
