Basic Concepts of Groundwater Modeling with MODFLOW and Model Muse

MODFLOW is a software for groundwater modeling developed by the USGS. The software is capable of representing conditions related to groundwater flow such as evapotranspiration, recharge, drainage, river interaction among others. Its finite different approach gives the capability to calculate the flow regime with exceptional control on water budget discrepancy. With MODFLOW one can rely on that the flow going in the model is the same as the flow going out of it, from the regional scale and on cross sections.

MODFLOW was designed to calculate water heads and groundwater flow regimes, and it can be coupled with a strong transport model as MT3DMS. A good tool for particle tracking modeling is MODPATH, this software is capable of calculating flow lines and time related to particles on groundwater flow.

The latest and most comprehensive pre-processing software is MODEL MUSE, which implements most features of MODFLOW and MT3DMS.

MODEL MUSE has a high performance due to the “design by objects” concept that optimizes the conceptualization of boundary conditions edges and other hydraulic parameters, reducing model construction time and improves output data interpretation.
